With his playing time already down in the midst of a rough season, Aaron Hicks is aware he may be in the Yankees lineup even less once Harrison Bader, who was acquired from St. Louis at the trade deadline for Jordan Montgomery is healthy and playing, which could be as soon as Tuesday.
“I expect [Bader] to come in and start playing every day, as he should,” Hicks said Saturday. “He got traded here to help us win. We need him to be himself to win a World Series. When I get opportunities, I’ll try to make the most of them, but it’s extremely hard when I play a game and then I’m off for three days and now there’s another outfielder out there.”
Hicks, who has three years and $30 million left on his contract, was benched when he misplayed a pair of fly balls during the Yankees’ last homestand, when fans began chanting “Joey Gallo” at him. Hicks acknowledged the possibility it might be better if he plays somewhere else next season.
Asked if he can make it work in New York, Hicks said: “I don’t know. The Yankees are gonna have to make a decision and I’ll wait for whatever happens. It’s not really my call.”
But he has noticed how Gallo has had some improved results after being traded to the Dodgers following his disastrous stint with the Yankees.
