Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has conceded defeat in his bid to retain the Champions League after his side fell 3-1 to Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

The Blues put in a woeful first-half showing which saw Karim Benzema net two superb headers, but Kai Havertz pulled one back before the break to give Chelsea some renewed optimism heading into the second half.

The rug would soon be pulled out from under their feet, however, as a huge error from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gifted Benzema his third and put the game to bed – despite Chelsea's best efforts late on.

After the game, Tuchel was asked whether this tie was still alive, to which he responded: "No."
