The Green Bay Packers are getting back edge rusher Za’Darius Smith for the start of the postseason.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers cleared Smith to return and he is expected to practice this coming week, setting the stage for him to play when the Packers open the postseason in two weeks.
Smith has missed all but one game this season after needing back surgery. He sat out most of training camp, returned to play 18 snaps in Week 1 and then was shut down for surgery.
Smith was one of the NFL’s most productive pass-rushers in 2019 and 2020, tallying 26.0 sacks and 60 quarterback hits over 32 games.
The Packers have a first-round bye, giving Smith time to practice and get back in football shape before the start of the postseason. His return will likely be joined by All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander, giving the Packers two important pieces at premium defensive positions to open the playoff run.
Matt LaFleur’s team also returned left tackle David Bakhtiari on Sunday in Detroit. The Packers are getting healthy at exactly the right time.
