Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman entered Sunday as one of just four quarterbacks in NFL history to win three Super Bowls. After Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII, social media wasted little time trolling the Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN broadcaster.
In September 2019, The Athletic tweeted a stat about how Mahomes had thrown 36 percent of Aikman’s career touchdown passes in just 8 percent of games. It struck a nerve with the Cowboys’ icon, who responded that same day by bringing up the fact that Mahomes didn’t have a single Super Bowl ring.

While fans ate up the response at the time, crediting Aiman for prioritizing what really mattered, the tweet hasn’t aged well. Mahomes won his first Super Bowl that same season, getting to that 33 percent threshold just months after Aikman’s tweet. Of course, the Chiefs’ quarterback wasn’t done.
After Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl title, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII, fans flocked to Twitter to remind Aikman that his achievement was quickly being chased down. Meanwhile, Mahomes’ statistical pace remained on track to blow past Aikman’s numbers.
Now, after witnessing Mahomes lead another comeback to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the third time before age 29, sports fans savored the moment of reminding Aikman that he has already been caught up to by Mahomes.
