The New York Giants have made a decision on Saquon Barkley after signing him to a new contract.
Barkley signed a one-year deal with the Giants following an offseason holdout, refusing to play on the franchise tag and getting himself a bit more money than he would have earned on the tag.
With the Giants having regressed from last season, winning just one of their first six games, there has been some trade speculation surrounding the running back. Barkley, though, does not want to leave the team and, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Giants don’t want to trade him either.
“Sitting here, everyone knows how I feel. Everyone knows I don’t want to get traded,” the player told reporters on Friday. “I don’t think anyone in their right mind would want to get traded anywhere.
“It’s not an easy thing to do. You have to move. I have a family. I would love to be here. But like I said, it’s not in my control. My focus is to be the leader I can be for this team and get this thing on the right track.”
“He’ll probably get what he wants. I was told the Giants aren’t planning on moving him,” Russini notes in a column detailing trade possibilities ahead of the deadline.
Barkley has appeared in three games for NY this season. He’s rushed for 2017 yards and one touchdown on 53 touches, recording 3.9 yards per rush attempt.
The player has been limited in practice due to an ankle problem but should suit up against the Washington Commanders this Sunday as he hasn’t been assigned an injury designation for Week 7.
