The game of basketball is an ever-evolving thing. Some don’t like it. That’s fine. Purists will always find a way to complain, yet, things will always change anyway. The NBA is no exception.
In particular, the responsibilities of point guards have changed dramatically. Now, we see a wider range of play styles at that position than ever before.
Some point guards, like D’Angelo Russell of the Minnesota Timberwolves, rely on the pick-and-roll. Others, like Kyle Lowry of the Miami Heat, prefer to space the floor off-ball.
With Russell being on an expiring contract, it would be much easier for the Heat to take a chance on trading for him knowing there isn’t a lengthy, upfront commitment.
The Timberwolves clearly need to change something. Adding a winner like Lowry could help to stabilize the locker room and perhaps he gets comfortable on the court in a new situation.
Could these two different point guards switch sides this season?
