Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren is in favor of playing College Football Playoff quarterfinal games on campus sites, he said Wednesday after a panel session at the Sports Business Journal Intercollegiate Athletics Forum. Here’s what you need to know:

Warren pointed to the home-field advantages and weather conditions that would differentiate quarterfinal games from bowl games or neutral-site clashes.

The quarterfinals are scheduled to be played at a rotation of New Year’s Six bowl sites in 2024 and ’25, as part of the early expansion plan agreed upon by the College Football Playoff management committee in November.

Backstory

The recently agreed-to 12-team Playoff, announced Dec. 1, has first-round games being played at either the home field of the higher-seeded team or at another site designated by the higher-seeded school. The New Year’s Six bowl games will then rotate hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals, with the national championship being played at a neutral site.
