As a general rule, no NBA team is looking to trade a star unless they’re receiving a better one in return. Unless, of course, circumstances force their hand.
The Utah Jazz’s hand may be forced with Donovan Mitchell. Granted, there does not appear to be a formal trade request from the star guard.
Still, the Rudy Gobert trade may have made moving him in their best interests anyway.
After all, the Jazz got quite a return for Gobert. In particular, they have to be thrilled with the four first-round picks they landed for the big man. With that said, none of the assets they received for him will make them better than Gobert could have in 2022-23.
Having accepted a rebuilding package for Gobert, there’s a strong case to make that the Jazz should continue rebuilding. On the other hand, the Miami Heat will do no such thing this summer. They’ll be in the running for an NBA championship one way or another.
Here’s a deal that has them landing Donovan Mitchell to aid that quest.
Utah Jazz Receive: G Kyle Lowry, G Tyler Herro, 2023 First-Round Pick (MIA), 2027 First-Round Pick (MIA), 2029 First-Round Pick (MIA)
Miami Heat Receive: G Donovan Mitchell
