Hubert Davis never shied away from the inevitable last season. No matter what, he’d only have Brady Manek in a Tar Heels uniform for a matter of months.
And unfortunately for North Carolina fans, time’s up.
Reality hit home in full last week when Davis boarded a plane to Washington, D.C., where Manek had a pre-draft workout with the Washington Wizards. “I just wanted to give him a hug,” Davis said on Wednesday, during his first summer press conference, “and tell him how proud I was of him.” The two spoke for about an hour, Davis added, before reiterating that he can’t imagine how there isn’t a role for someone like Manek, who averaged 15.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last season, while making 40.3 percent of his 3s, in the NBA.
We’ll find out for sure next week during the NBA Draft. For the time being, though, Davis’ focus is less on where Manek eventually ends up … and more on how to replace his precious production.
The good news: UNC has a number of options this offseason to help fill the void left by Manek’s departure.
