Football coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia administration are close to finalizing a long-term contract extension that will pay him “commensurate … with a national championship-winning coach,” according to school president Jere Morehead.
The terms and other details were not announced, but everything is close enough that Morehead updated the school’s Athletic Board on Thursday at its regularly scheduled meeting.
Smart’s current contract was due to run out after the 2024 season, but this one is likely to last well into the decade and probably beyond. All indications from Morehead and athletic director Josh Brooks are that the process has been a relatively smooth one.
“We work closely with his agent (Jimmy Sexton) on it,” Brooks said. “It’s been a great process with him. No qualms there. It’s been a great process.”
