As COVID-19 continues to affect player availability and subsequently leads to game cancellations, the Atlantic 10, eyeing up a season filled with disruptions, has requested a blanket waiver to adjust the redshirting rules, commissioner Bernadette McGlade told The Athletic. Currently, NCAA rules stipulate that if a basketball player appears in a single game, he or she can no longer redshirt.

But the A10 is asking that redshirt players be permitted to serve as essentially emergency fill-ins for up to four games without burning their sit-out year. The request is for the waiver to apply to all Division I basketball — men’s and women’s — and only for this year.

McGlade submitted the proposal on Jan. 4, after a host of games were canceled, including 19 in her own league. She hoped that it would be put in place immediately. The NCAA, however, requested clarification on some points. It will now be part of the agenda for the men’s and women’s oversight committees, which meet next Tuesday at the NCAA Convention. If the committees endorse the proposal, the Division I council can vote to enact them immediately, at their meeting on Wednesday.
