The New York Yankees reportedly made a move over the weekend that seems to clearly indicate what the organization’s likely thinking is about manager Aaron Boone’s future with the club.

For just the fifth time since 1995, the New York Yankees will not be in the MLB playoffs. While the team did avoid their first losing season in over 30 years, their 82-80 record in 2023 was a major disappointment for the franchise. Surely, key injuries to top players like Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodon played a major role in their finish, but there are still many questions for the team heading into the offseason.

The biggest narrative that has received a great deal of speculation is the future of manager Aaron Boone. The one-time member of the roster has held the position since 2018 and has done a good job without having any previous managerial experience. However, for a team with such a high standard, it is hard to overlook the team still has not won a championship under his watch and this past season was his worst yet, outside their pandemic-shortened season in 2020.

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been various rumblings about whether Boone will hold on to his job for a seventh season in 2024. Over the weekend we may have gotten our clearest indication yet about if the 50-year-old will be in pinstripes next season.

On Sunday, New York Post MLB insider Greg Joyce reported that the skipper and general manager Brian Cashman has informed hitting coach Sean Casey that they would like to retain his services for next season. The former Cincinnati Reds star was hired mid-season after the team fired his predecessor Dillon Lawson. Casey was a pick of Boone’s after the two played together in Cincy.Boone is in the final year of his contract, and with the organization bringing his hand-picked coach and friend back in 2024, chances are he will remain the New York Yankees manager for at least one more season.
