The 2023 US Open begins on Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Most of the top stars in the sport are healthy and playing, but there are a few notable absences in the men’s draw, including Rafael Nadal, Nick Kyrgios, and Denis Shapovalov.

We won’t see too many headline matches until the second or third round, but there’s certainly some upset potential in the first round, along with some other intriguing matches.

US Open Odds: J.J. Wolf -211; Zhizhen Zhang +150

There’s strong upset potential in this first-round match. J.J. Wolf is the more well-known player and higher-ranked (world No. 44 compared to No. 67) but is 0-1 against Zhizhen Zhang. Wolf has also lost three consecutive matches, whereas Zhang has alternated wins and losses in his last four matches.

Zhang beat Wolf in three sets at a Tallahassee Challenger event in 2022. This will be a more high-profile match, obviously, but expect the 26-year-old Chinese player to replicate his past success over Wolf.

Alexander Bublik vs. Dominic Thiem

US Open Odds: Alexander Bublik -179; Dominic Thiem +129

Don’t expect an upset here. Dominic Thiem is a former US Open champion but is far from the player he once was in 2020. Alexander Bublik, a 26-year-old Kazakhstan player, is having the best year of his career.

He reached a career-best world No. 25 in July and won his second career title in Halle, where he beat Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Andrey Rublev.

Bublik has struggled a bit as of late but has proven the pedigree to beat big-name opponents and should push past Thiem, who is just 13-18 this season and ranked No. 81 in the world.

Emma Navarro vs. Magdalena Frech

US Open Odds: Emma Navarro -168; Magdalena Frech +122

This is quite the toss-up, as both Emma Navarro and Magdalena Frech have alternated wins and losses this season without really gaining any momentum. Navarro is 4-6 in her last ten matches, and Frech is 3-7. They have never played each other.

Navarro has the better record across all levels of competition this year (45-19 compared to 28-25) but hasn’t played as much on hard courts. Frech has also won two of her last three matches, while Navarro has lost consecutive matches. Take the underdog in a toss-up like this one.

Sloane Stephens vs. Beatriz Haddad Maia

US Open Odds: Sloane Stephens -102; Beatriz Haddad Maia -132

Sloane Stephens isn’t quite at the level she was when she won the US Open in 2017, but she’s certainly playing her best tennis in years. Last year, she would have been a major underdog against a contender like Beatriz Haddad Maia, but she’s a slight favorite in this year’s first-round match.

Stephens is 23-17 this season and reached the Round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open and quarter-finals at Tennis in the Land. She has beaten quality opponents like Caroline Garcia, Mirra Andreeva, and Karolina Pliskova as of late.
