Players Championship 17-18 Event Details
The Players Championship is organized by the Professional Dart Corporation and is the first of two huge events to take place on the darts schedule across the final two months of the year, with the PDC World Championships getting underway just four weeks later.
The two £100,000 events will see a field of 128 players – comprised of PDC Tour Card Holders and PDPA Associate Members – competing across two days of action, with £12,000 on offer to the winner each day.
Each Players Championship will see a field of 64 players involved, with Butlins Resort in Minehead, England, playing host to the event. Action at the Players Championship Finals will get underway in November, with a number of previous champions among the likely contenders.
Michael van Gerwen Bidding For More Success
The Players Championship has been dominated by Michael van Gerwen in recent times, as the Dutchman has made the finals on eight occasions since 2013. Over that period, he has won the event on seven occasions, which is more than any other player.
The Dutchman has reached the final in three of the previous four editions, which includes an 11-6 victory in the showpiece event in 2022 over Rob Cross. Once again, he looks set to be the player to beat.

Peter Wright Chasing Second Win
Peter Wright is a player who knows what it takes to go deep at the Players Championship, and he will once again be a leading contender in 2023. The Scottish player won the event in 2021 and has since added to his collection of accolades with a win at the World Championship for the second time in 2022.
He is yet to land a premier event on the PDC calendar since that second triumph, but he remains the third-ranked player in the world and should have every chance of reaching a second final.

Michael Smith Looking For Maiden Title
As the world’s top-ranked darts player, Michael Smith will certainly be among the standout players to win the Players Championship in 2023. The 32-year-old landed World Championship glory at the start of 2023, which was his second premier event win after landing the Grand Prix in 2022.
However, he is yet to showcase his skills at the top level of this event, with his previous best appearance coming in 2020 as he reached the quarterfinal stage. But Smith remains in the form of his life and holds every chance of landing a maiden title at Maidenhead in 2023.

Other Likely Contenders
There will be no shortage of likely contenders at the Players Championship this year, with a number of players already having reached the final. Those include 2014 champion Gary Anderson, who was sensationally beaten in the second round in 2022.
Adrian Lewis is another player who has previously excelled at the tournament, twice reaching the final in 2014 and 2015. Lewis could be one of the outside betting angles to go keep at the tournament in 2023.
