The Dallas Cowboys will be without two safeties for several weeks after they both suffered injuries in training camp.

Per Nick Eatman of the Cowboys’ official team website, head coach Mike McCarthy stated on Wednesday that safeties Donovan Wilson and Israel Mukuamu both have injuries that will keep them out multiple weeks.

Wilson is dealing with a calf injury that he suffered on Wednesday, per Eatman, while Mukuamu is nursing a calf strain. Wilson’s injury could keep him out 4-6 weeks, Eatman added, which puts his status for the club’s Week 1 opener against the New York Giants in question.

The Cowboys are coming off a second straight 12-win season, and it’s largely thanks to the defense under defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Dallas finished seventh and fifth in scoring defense in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, respectively.

Both safeties Donovan Wilson (calf strain) and Israel Mukuamu (undisclosed) left practice with injures. Wilson will be out for some time but should be back before week one.

Wilson has emerged as a stalwart playmaker in a Cowboys’ secondary led by All-Pro corner Trevon Diggs and former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, who was acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts.

A sixth-round draft choice of the Cowboys back in 2021 (227th overall), Mukuamu has appeared in 19 games to date. He has one interception, one pass defense and 17 combined tackles in those contests.

After visiting the Giants on Sunday night in Week 1, the Cowboys will return home to welcome Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets for their home opener.
