The Indy 500: America’s most iconic race

This year’s race will be the 106th running of the Indy 500. IndyCar’s most famous race is held each year at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and, as tradition, the winning driver celebrates with a jug of cold milk on victory row. This is an homage to the 1936 Indy 500 winner Louis Meyer who drank milk after winning because his mother said it would refresh him on a hot day.

Now, that celebration is one of the most famous in all of motorsports. On May 29th we will find out who will be celebrating their Indy500 win with that iconic glass of milk. Currently the IndyCar betting odds have Scott Dixon, Colon Herta, Alex Palou, and Josef Newgarden all at +800 as favorites to win the race.

2022 IndyCar Season Results

So far the IndyCar 2022 season has been spectacular. Championship leader Will Power has five top-five finishes, but is yet to win a race. The second place driver Alex Palou has three top three finishes, but also has not won a race yet. This shows just how important every race result is, even when you’re not in first place.

Josef Newgarden, who sits in fourth place in the standings, has won two of the five races this season. Newgarden is +800 to win the Indy 500 this year and has performed past everyone’s expectations. He will be trying to take home his third win of the year in Indianapolis, and if he does will have won half of the races this season.

Last year’s Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves has not won a race this year so far and will look to break that streak in Indianapolis. Alex Palou, who came in second to Helio last season in Indianapolis, is the favorite to win the race and he is currently in second place in the championship standings.

2021 Indy 500 results

Last season’s Indy 500 was an exciting one that included a pit lane crash, many lead changes, and a pit lane disaster for Scott Dixon. Colton Herta, Conor Daly, and Rinus Veekay had an incredible battle at the front, and Helio Castroneves came from the back to win the race.

Castroneves wasn’t in the top three until lap 47, but took home his fourth career Indy 500 win in his 21st appearance in the race. Castroneves is currently a +1600 underdog to win the race this year and only has one top ten finish all season- a ninth place finish in long beach.

Indy 500 Betting Picks and Predictions

  • Best Bets: Palou +800, Sato +2000

Alex Palou was the runner up in last year’s Indy 500 and he had his worst race of the 2022 season last weekend. I expect Palou to bounce back and claim his first ever Indy 500 win in only his third season.

Takuma Sato is an experienced driver who has won the Indy 500 before. In fact he won the race only two years ago and is currently putting up great lap times in practice. I love a little sprinkle on Sato to win at +2000 on a track he clearly knows how to handle.
