Not only did T.J. Watt tie Michael Strahan’s NFL single-season sack record Sunday in Baltimore, but he may have revolutionized how players prepare in the preseason.
Watt did not practice in full-team drills in training camp and played in no exhibition games while his agents and the Steelers negotiated a whopping contract extension that made him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Boy, was it worth it for both sides.
Watt will lead the league in sacks for the second straight season and tied Strahan’s record of 22.5 set in 2001, in his ninth of 15 seasons with the New York Giants. Strahan finished his career with 141.5 sacks and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In just five seasons (and missing two games to injury this year), Watt has more than half of Strahan’s career total. He joined the late Reggie White as the only players with at least 13 sacks in four straight seasons.
