Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabriel Davis stepped up and started in place of the injured Emmanuel Sanders.
It was a seamless replacement.
Against the Carolina Panthers in Week 15, Davis led the Bills (8-6) in their 31-14 win. He had five catches, 85 yards and two touchdowns. All team-highs.
What that comes down to is some simple faith in one another between him and his quarterback, Josh Allen, he said on Sunday.
“I just try to show him that (Allen) can trust me in certain situations. And that’s what I try to do each and every week throughout the week,” Davis said via video conference.
Allen and Davis being on the same page was something that was a bit expected, though. Davis did have a promising rookie season in 2020 after all.
Like Davis, when Allen was asked about his counterpart, he uttered the “T” word.
“I got a lot of trust in him. He continues to make plays,” Allen said. “He’s a strong, physical dude. Again, he wants it. He wants the ball. It’s good to have those types of guys.”
Moving forward, Sanders will likely return to the lineup… at some point. However, Davis is making his case for more playing time even when he does come back.
Davis is on a three-game touchdown streak.
That decision will ultimately come down to what Sean McDermott thinks. Like many, the Buffalo head coach was impressed against Carolina.
“Tremendous. It was another game where he showed up and was productive for us,” McDermott said postgame. “Mentally, he was working while he was waiting and today I think you saw it again where he produced for us and he made some big plays.”
As of now, Sanders’ status is unknown. He was previously dubbed to have a knee injury and was called “week-to-week” so perhaps he can suit up against the New England Patriots in Week 16.
The more the merrier for the biggest game of the year, but regardless, Davis is rolling at a perfect time.
