The Oakland Athletics are reportedly in discussions to secure a long-term contract extension with their standout outfielder, Lawrence Butler. According to The Athletic’s Evan Drellich, General Manager David Forst confirmed that the team is negotiating extensions with multiple players, though he did not specify names.
Butler, 24, showcased impressive performance during the latter part of his rookie season in 2024. After a brief stint with Triple-A Las Vegas due to early struggles, he returned to the majors on June 18 and, over 84 games, achieved a .291 batting average, a .330 on-base percentage, and a .565 slugging percentage, contributing 20 home runs and 50 RBIs.
When approached about the potential extension, Butler expressed his enthusiasm for the organization, stating, “I love being here. I’m excited to be here. I’m excited to play here.”
Teammate Brent Rooker praised Butler’s talent, noting, “Lawrence Butler is, if he’s not already a superstar, he’s on his way to being one.”
The Athletics have recently made significant financial commitments, including extensions for Rooker and manager Mark Kotsay, as well as signing starting pitcher Luis Severino to the largest free-agent contract in franchise history. Securing Butler long-term appears to be a priority as the team looks to maintain a strong core for the future.
