Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar confirmed Wednesday that Ross Colton suffered a broken foot in the first period of the 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.

“Ross broke his foot on that shot, so he’ll be going to miss some time, like six to eight weeks, I’m guessing. And Woody (Miles Wood) is he’s probably seven to 10 days,” Bednar said after morning skate.

Miles Wood has been playing through some lingering issues but Bednar said he is out with an upper-body injury.

“It’s something that’s been bothering him here for a little bit, he’s just been trying to play through it — now can’t,” Bednar said.

Colton racked up nine points (8G, 1A) in 10 games at left wing on the top line with Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon and at center on other lines.

“Well, next man up mentality continues with us. I think unfortunate that we’re missing a lot of forwards at the moment, but I don’t think we can do anything about it, other than just focus on the game, how we can play and how we can grab some points in these games,” Rantanen said. “Obviously not ideal, like you said, but we just got to battle, as a team get together — leaders, lead the way and try to get wins.”

Along with Colton and Wood missing, Artturi Lehkonen and Jonathan Drouin remain out. Bednar said he will have an update on Lehkonen’s status Wednesday night.

“We’re missing a lot of guys, and now we just got to work. I feel like our work ethic got to be full 60 minutes. Sometimes not all five guys are working at the same time in the game,” Rantanen said.  “We play good periods and good stretches, but then I feel like, even five minutes, you fall asleep in this league, it usually costs you a goal or two. So that’s what we got to get better at, is consistency and try to get a full 60.”
