In this article we will formulate a Boston Bruins vs Toronto Maple Leafs prediction for this NHL game on Tuesday, April 30th at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Let’s take a look at the prediction for game five in this series.

Boston’s Defense Has Been Strong

The Boston Bruins come into this matchup looking to advance to the second round, as they are leading 3-1 in the series. The Bruins cruised to an easy victory in game one of the series, but the last three games have been much closer. Boston has won games one, three, and four by scores of 5-1, 4-2, and 3-1, and their defense has been great. The Bruins have not allowed many goals, but they have allowed a decent amount of chances. Boston is anchored by two excellent goaltenders, which helps clean up any defensive mistakes.

Boston finished the regular season with losses to Ottawa, Washington, and Carolina in three of their last four games, but that did not carry over into this series. The Bruins are scoring 3.50 goals per game, while going 46.2% on the power play and 92.9% on the penalty kill in the series. Brad Marchand has led Boston with three goals, five assists, and 14 shots on goal.

Maple Leafs Searching for Answers

The Toronto Maple Leafs come into this game with their backs against the wall and they are on the road. Toronto was able to win one game in Boston to even the series at one, but they lost both games at home, scoring just three goals in the process. The Maple Leafs have really struggled to generate much offensively and their effort in the first and second periods in game four was concerning. On the bright side, Toronto did play well in the third period on Saturday and will hopefully carry that momentum into this game.

Toronto has lost seven of their last eight games, including their last four games in the regular season. The Maple Leafs are scoring 1.75 goals per game, while going 7.1% on the power play and 53.8% on the penalty kill in the series. Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Auston Matthews have led Toronto with three points in the first four games, but Matthews is questionable with an illness. The Maple Leafs have to get more production from guys like Matthews, Nylander, and Marner, or this will be their last game of the season.

Starting Goalies

The projected starting goalie for Toronto is Joseph Woll, who came on in relief of Samsonov in game four. Woll stopped all five shots he faced in the third period and he had a 2.94 goals against average and a .907 save percentage this season. The projected starting goalie for Boston is Jeremy Swayman, who has allowed four goals on 91 shots in the series. Ullmark is also an option for the Bruins, but he did allow three goals on 34 shots in his only start of the series. Swayman is the most likely option and he had a 2.53 goals against average and a .916 save percentage in the regular season.

Boston Bruins vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction

Boston comes into this game trying to close out the series, but they are going to face a desperate Toronto team here. The Maple Leafs haven’t played anywhere close to their full potential in the series and now Matthews might be out for this game. Toronto was a great road team during the regular season, but the Bruins were equally good at home. I do think Toronto has another level they can play at, but can they figure things out in this game? I know it’s not going to be a popular pick, but I do think Toronto comes out much better than they have and steals game five. My Boston Bruins vs Toronto Maple Leafs prediction is for the Leafs to grab the win.
