Five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola of Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle, the No. 1 overall player in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite, announced his commitment Monday by posting a graphic to his Twitter account. It was a picture of him in a Georgia uniform with a one-word message.

Home.

Home?

Ouch.

Think about how this story could have unfolded.

Consider his recruiting rankings and the hype plus the fact that he’s the son of a former Nebraska All-American and his uncle is currently on the Cornhuskers coaching staff. Now consider where Nebraska is right now. The program recently had to accept that legend Scott Frost wasn’t the answer as the head coach. Nebraska replaced him with program builder Matt Rhule, who will be the next to attempt to repair the damaged Cornhuskers brand. Now combine Raiola and Rhule, and picture what that could have meant — not only to Nebraska’s program, but to the sport of college football.

It didn’t happen. Raiola is the ideal example of why it’s so damn hard for anyone to build something new in this sport.
