The Edmonton Oilers (7-5-0) and Washington Capitals (5-6-1) meet Monday at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+).
The Oilers were kicked in the teeth by the visiting Dallas Stars Saturday, falling 6-2 on home ice for a 2nd straight loss. Edmonton has now allowed 4 or more goals in 3 straight games, and 4 of the past 5 games overall. It’s no surprise the Over is 3-1-1 across those outings.
The Capitals are also skidding, dropping 4 straight games overall, including an embarrassing 3-2 setback against the Arizona Coyotes as a heavy favorite Saturday. Washington has had a power outage on offense, totaling just 10 goals across the past 6 games, or 1.67 goals per game (GPG).
Oilers at Capitals odds
- Moneyline (ML): Oilers -150 (bet $150 to win $100) | Capitals +120 (bet $100 to win $120)
- Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Oilers -1.5 (+160) | Capitals +1.5 (-200)
- Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -130 | U: +105)
Oilers at Capitals projected goalies
Jack Campbell (5-3-0, 4.20 GAA, .874 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (4-5-1, 2.42 GAA, .919 SV%, 1 SO)
Campbell has allowed 4 or more goals in each of his past 3 starting assignments, although he is 2-1-0 during the span thanks to tremendous offensive support. “Soup” has conceded 3 or more goals in all but 1 of his 8 starts so far this season.
Kuemper allowed 3 goals on 26 shots in a loss against the Arizona Coyotes Saturday, one of his former teams. While he is just 1-3-1 across his past 5 starts, he hasn’t been the problem. In fact, Kuemper has a sparkling 1.81 GAA and .939 SV% during that span, but he has received just 8 goals of offensive support.
Oilers at Capitals picks and predictions
Prediction
Capitals 3, Oilers 2
Moneyline
The CAPITALS (+120) are a solid play as home ‘dogs Monday.
Neither of these sides is playing particularly well lately, and the Oilers have been a little more impressive offensively. However, Washington is on home ice and provides the better value. Plus, Edmonton is just 1-4 in its last 5 trips to D.C.
Puck line/Against the spread
The Capitals +1.5 (-200) will cost you 2 times your potential return for a little bit of insurance on the puck line.
Washington is a much more attractive play as a short ‘dog at home straight up, but not on the puck line at this price.
PASS.
Over/Under
UNDER 6.5(+105) is risky business in Edmonton games, as it has scored a lot, and given up a lot.
But Washington has been seeing tremendous goaltending from Kuemper, and he should be able to keep Edmonton at bay somewhat.
While all the trends point to Over for Edmonton, the Under has cashed in 6 in a row for Washington, and 4 straight against Western Conference foes, too.
