The offseason provides players around the NFL time to enjoy and appreciate life off the field. Personal projects and philanthropy are some of the top activities as players continue to give back to those who helped them achieve their goals.
The Kansas City Chiefs signed defensive end Malik Herring in 2021 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Georgia. Herring never touched the field last season as he took a redshirt year rehabbing a torn ACL suffered during practice at the 2021 Senior Bowl. The former Bulldog also spent his high school years in the Peach State attending Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, Georgia.
Last week, Herring, alongside his mother, decided to surprise his old high school with a complimentary breakfast. The 24-year old was shown in a video posted to the school’s social media handing out bags of McDonald’s breakfast he purchased for the staff. The high school is well-respected in the community, especially its football team.

“All kids grow up around here looking forward to playing for Mary Persons and representing that black and gold,” Herring’s mother, Sabrina Watts-Mays, said last year during an interview with WMAZ News 13 in Georgia.
Herring will be an interesting player to watch during offseason training as the Chiefs are always looking to develop talented defensive linemen. They could certainly use some help at edge rusher this upcoming season and if he returns to the lineup healthy it could be a big development. The second-year player will have an opportunity to see if his knee has recovered very soon with voluntary offseason workouts beginning next month.
