The Kansas City Chiefs have a new safety in the fold, after adding former Houston Texans S Justin Reid during the NFL’s legal tampering period.

Shortly after Reid’s deal was announced, he spoke with KRIV-TV (Fox 26 Houston) Sports Director Mark Berman about joining Kansas City. The deal was still fresh and so were Reid’s emotions on it.

“A lot of mixed emotions, mostly happiness,” Reid told Berman of reaching a three-year deal with Kansas City. “I’m so excited for the opportunity to go play in Kansas City and be a part of the culture and the fandom, the history they have over there. . . I’m so excited for the opportunity that I have in front of me playing in Kansas City.”

As for the nature of the contract, a three-year deal with $20 million in guarantees, there is a sense of relief after years of hard work. At the same time, Reid knows that he still has to earn his keep and prove to the Chiefs that he was worth the investment.

“To be honest with you, I don’t know if it’s hit me all the way yet,” Reid told Berman of his new contract with the Chiefs. “It’s definitely a good feeling. There’s a lot of blood, sweat, tears and hard work that’s gone into making this moment possible it does feel really good, but the work is not done yet. In fact, the work has just started. I’ve got to earn every penny of that, making it well worth the Hunt family’s while to come and pick me up. ”

Reid said that he was specifically chasing a three-year contract for the opportunity to hit free agency again at age 30. When the terms of this deal came across with Kansas City, it was a no-brainer for him.

“No decision is ever easy, but I tell you what, it’s a good problem to have whenever you’re making decisions with life-changing money that was being put on the table,” Reid said. “When the details got worked out it was a very easy yes. I’m so excited to get down there, start getting involved with the community, learning the football playbook and doing my part to make an impact and help the Chiefs win another Super Bowl.”

There’s also, of course, the prospect of playing with Patrick Mahomes. Reid has faced Mahomes three times since 2018, including in the 2019 playoffs during the Chiefs’ dramatic comeback win over the Texans.

“It’ll be a lot more fun playing with him than against him,” Reid joked. “That’s for sure.”
