The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to stick with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for the 2022 NFL season according to multiple reports.
As first reported by FanSided’s Matt Verderame and confirmed by WDAF-TV’s Harold R. Kuntz, the Chiefs anticipate Eric Bieniemy will return as offensive coordinator in 2022. NFL Network’s Jeffrey Chadiha and ESPN’s Adam Schefter have also since confirmed these reports.
Bieniemy signed a one-year contract following the 2020 NFL season with hopes of getting an NFL head coaching job in this cycle. Despite interviewing for multiple positions, Bieniemy was passed over yet again for an NFL head coaching job.
A report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Super Bowl Sunday revealed that Eric Bieniemy’s future in Kansas City was all but certain. Schefter reported that Andy Reid and Bieniemy would meet to discuss the future, noting that several options were on the table, including Bieniemy leaving the Chiefs. That meeting has since taken place, in an informal setting while Reid was in California for John Madden’s Memorial per Verderame’s report. Clearly, that meeting went amicably for Bieniemy to be returning as offensive coordinator in 2022.
Bieniemy has been with the Chiefs since Andy Reid first arrived in 2013, serving as running backs coach from 2013 through 2017. When Matt Nagy left to become head coach of the Chicago Bears following the 2017 NFL season, Bieniemy was promoted to offensive coordinator. In each of the four seasons that Bieniemy has been the offensive coordinator, Kansas City has finished within the top 6 in the league in total offense. They’ve also been to four consecutive AFC championship games and two Super Bowls (LIV and LV) under his leadership and guidance on offense.
Bieniemy’s aspirations to become an NFL head coach remain, so Chiefs fans can expect another one-
