Chargers draft son of Hall of Fame player

Larry Brown Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers used one of their draft picks Saturday on a player with a great pedigree.

The Chargers had a pair of 7th-round picks and used the No. 225 overall pick on Brenden Rice. Rice is the son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice.

Brenden began his college career playing at Colorado from 2020-2021 before transferring to USC for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Rice’s stats improved each season he was in school. He capped off his college career with 45 catches for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns — all career-high marks.

The Chargers are a good landing spot for Rice given their need at the position. They got rid of both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, leaving them with last year’s first-round pick Quentin Johnston, and Josh Palmer as their top remaining receivers. In addition to Rice, the Chargers also drafted receivers Ladd McConkey and Cornelius Johnson.
