Opening Night Woes: Banged-Up Rockets and Thunder Kick Off Season
A highly anticipated Western Conference matchup to start the season has been dampened by significant injuries on both sides. The young and ascending Houston Rockets travel to Oklahoma City to take on a Thunder team that took the league by storm last season. While both rosters are packed with talent, the injury reports are lengthy, and the teams that take the floor will be missing key starters and rotation players.
Houston Rockets Outlook
The Rockets enter the season with playoff aspirations, but they are facing a catastrophic blow before the first tip-off. According to reports, starting point guard and veteran leader Fred VanVleet may have suffered a torn ACL, an injury that could sideline him for the entire campaign. This loss is devastating for a young team that relies on his steady hand, playmaking, and floor spacing.
Without VanVleet, the offensive load will fall even more heavily on the shoulders of star center Alperen Sengun and explosive guard Jalen Green. The team will also look for a contribution from newly acquired forward Dorian Finney-Smith, who is expected to make his franchise debut. The question for Houston is who can step up to run the offense and how they will generate consistent scoring without their floor general.
Oklahoma City Thunder Outlook
The Thunder aren’t coming into this game healthy, either. The team will be significantly shorthanded for their “banner night” opener. Most notably, they will be without their second-best player, forward Jalen “J-Dub” Williams, who is out with an undisclosed injury. Williams’ absence is a massive loss on both ends of the floor.
Joining him on the sidelines will be three-point specialist Isaiah Joe, veteran glue guy Kenrich Williams (knee), and rookie Nikola Topic. The absence of J-Dub and Joe removes two of OKC’s most important offensive weapons alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
MVP runner-up Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will have to carry an even heavier offensive burden, while Chet Holmgren will be tasked with anchoring the defense against the crafty Sengun. The Thunder will need players like Lu Dort and Cason Wallace to step into larger roles immediately.
Prediction
This matchup has been turned on its head by injuries. The spread of Thunder -6.5 was likely set before the full extent of their injuries, particularly the loss of Jalen Williams, was known. On the other side, the Rockets losing their starting point guard and leader in Fred VanVleet is arguably just as crippling.
Both offenses will struggle to find their rhythm. The Thunder have the best player on the court in SGA and the advantage of playing at home, but they are missing a huge piece of their offensive puzzle. The Rockets will likely look disorganized at times without VanVleet orchestrating the attack.
Given the significant offensive players missing from this game (VanVleet, Jalen Williams, Isaiah Joe), points will be at a premium. The under is the most compelling play here. While the Thunder should still find a way to win at home behind a big night from SGA and their stout defense, asking them to cover 6.5 points without Jalen Williams is a tall order against a Rockets team that will play hard, even if they are shorthanded.
The Pick: Thunder 110, Rockets 106Prediction: Rockets +6.5Best Bet: Under 227.5
