For the first time since the season opener on Oct. 9, the Winnipeg Jets battled the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. That game saw Winnipeg dismantle Edmonton 6-0, en route to a perfect 8-0-0 record to start the season. The Jets haven’t looked back as they sit first in the Central Division with 98 points heading into this contest, nine points ahead of the second-place Dallas Stars. This meeting was closer than the first as the Jets defeated the Oilers 4-3 in overtime in a tight-checking, playoff-style game. Here’s your game recap.
Game Recap
Edmonton opened the scoring 5:28 into the first period on an unassisted marker. Jeff Skinner entered the zone and ripped a shot upstairs, past goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for his 12th of the season.
Then, Winnipeg tied the game 13:39 into the period. Dylan Samberg threw the puck on the net and the juicy rebound landed on the tape of Cole Perfetti, and he made no mistake, beating a sprawling Stuart Skinner for his 15th of the season. So, this game was tied 1-1 heading into the second period, with the shots only 5-4 in favour of the visitors.

The Oilers took the lead at 5:30 into the middle frame. Connor McDavid entered the zone with speed, circled the net and found Skinner in front. His shot deflected off Nikolaj Ehlers and through Hellebuyck’s legs for his second of the contest. Winnipeg challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the call on the ice stood, which sent Edmonton to the power play.
However, after that successful penalty kill, the Jets tied the game on a 2-on-1 rush. Nino Niederreiter’s pass was redirected by Josh Morrissey and past Edmonton’s netminder for his 11th of the campaign. Like the first period, this game was tied after two, with Edmonton having a slim 13-12 shot advantage. McDavid got hurt in the second period and did not return, so the Oilers were without their two best players, as Leon Draisaitl didn’t play in this one.
The Jets took their first lead 3:56 into the third period. The puck was thrown on the net and Brandon Tanev jammed in the loose puck on the ensuing scramble in front for his 10th of the season.

Then, Zach Hyman tied the game for his 25th of the season. Darnell Nurse’s point shot was tipped in front, and Hyman buried the loose puck. Then with five minutes remaining, the Oilers’ netminder was pulled by the concussion spotter, being replaced by Calvin Pickard. But, this game headed to overtime tied at three.
In extra time, Kyle Connor won the game for Winnipeg with his 37th of the campaign. His quick release beat Pickard blocker side to secure the Jets’ 100th point of the season, tied with the Washington Capitals for the league lead.
The Oilers continue their four-game homestand against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday (March 22). Meanwhile, the Jets begin a four-game homestand against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday (March 23). These two teams conclude their three-game season series on April 13 in Winnipeg.
