The Winnipeg Jets traveled to Washington, where they took on the Seattle Kraken on Sunday, March 16. Despite a close game, the Jets took the victory 3-2 in overtime.
Game Recap
Three minutes into the first period, Eric Comrie was pulled from the game after enduring a collision with Matty Beniers and a fellow Jets player. Connor Hellebuyck entered the fray.
A minute later, former Kraken Brandon Tanev laid a heavy hit on Shane Wright. Tye Kartye was not letting him get away with this. Both Kartye and Tanev got into a scuffle, and the pair had to sit for roughing. Right after the two teams returned to 5-on-5, Cole Perfetti took a seat for hooking. On their first power play opportunity of the night, the Kraken took advantage. 35 seconds left on the power play, Chandler Stephenson won the faceoff. He passed to Beniers at the boards, who sent the puck back up to Stephenson. He whipped the puck up the boards, where it found Jordan Eberle. Eberle spotted Jani Nyman alone in the center of the ice. He passed it down to Nyman, who took the shot and sent the puck into the top corner of Hellebuyck’s net.
Ten minutes after being pulled from the game, Comrie returned to defend the crease. Luckily, he was okay and able to finish out the game.
Shortly after Comrie returned, the Kraken slipped a goal past him. Ryker Evans sent the puck through the neutral zone, into the Kraken’s offensive zone, where it found Michael Eyssimont. He possessed the puck and outskated the two Jets players trying to flank him. Eyssimont took the shot as he got closer to the net and the puck went right through Comrie’s legs and into the back of the goal.
With 17 seconds left to go in the first, the Jets cut Seattle’s lead in half. Vladislav Namestnikov sent the puck to Dylan Samberg at the blue line. Samberg took a shot that was stopped by Joey Daccord. Perfetti recovered the rebound from in front of the net and with a second shot, scored the first of the night for the visitors.
Halfway into the second period, the score was now tied. Morgan Barron picked up the puck off a misplay by the Kraken. He sent the puck down the ice into the Jets’ offensive zone, where Kyle Connor was waiting. He picked up the puck and skated up to the net uncontested to bring the score to 2-2.
Despite 11 shots on net for the Jets and six for the Kraken in the third period, neither team was able to break the tie. This game went into overtime to decide the winner.
Less than two minutes into OT, the Jets scored the final goal. Samberg received the puck from Namestnikov. Samberg passed it to Perfetti, who skated around the faceoff circle and to the front of the net. Instead of taking the shot himself, he passed to Samberg, who was also in front of the net. Samberg’s shot bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net to give the Jets the victory.
