Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes has decided to withdraw from representing Team USA at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off. Canucks GM Patrik Allvin confirmed this news on Sunday, stating that Hughes, who was initially selected to play, is sidelined with an undisclosed injury. He has been out since January 31st following the Canucks’ 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars.
Despite the disappointment, Hughes’ decision to skip the tournament was made with the long-term goal of ensuring his readiness for the Canucks’ playoff push. The team currently sits three points ahead of the Calgary Flames for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. Hughes will focus on his recovery over the next two weeks, with hopes of returning at full strength by February 22nd when the Canucks face the Vegas Golden Knights.
The decision was reportedly tough for Hughes, who is known for his commitment to his team. His agent, Pat Brisson, mentioned, “It’s not in his DNA to back out of anything… but he feels responsible as captain of the Canucks to be at his best for his team.”
Hughes is having a stellar season with 14 goals and 59 points in 47 games, and he remains one of the top contenders for the Norris Trophy after winning it last season. His absence from the 4 Nations will be felt, but his focus is now on helping the Canucks secure a playoff spot.
With Hughes pulling out and J.T. Miller being traded to the New York Rangers, the Canucks will only have two representatives in the tournament: Kevin Lankinen for Team Finland and Elias Pettersson for Team Sweden. Finland will face the U.S. on Thursday, while Sweden will play Canada on Wednesday.
