A top American League club has traded for New York Mets’ star pitcher Max Scherzer.

Per multiple reports, the Mets have traded the three-time Cy Young winner to the Texas Rangers. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are receiving prospect Luisangel Acuña in return for the future Hall of Famer.

In the 2021 offseason, the 2019 World Series champion signed a lucrative three-year deal with the Mets worth $130 million. The contract allows Scherzer to opt out after the 2023 season, though that seems highly unlikely since his 2024 option would be worth a mammoth $43.3 million. And given his age (39), there’s no reason to believe that Scherzer would get a salary that high.

The Mets entered play on Saturday with a disappointing record of 49-54, and with the playoffs essentially out of reach, they had no choice but to sell ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline. Now, we wait and see if they deal away any more big-named players before Tuesday.

Scherzer joins a Rangers team that led the AL West with a 60-44 record entering play on Saturday.
