Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne and wide receiver Keon Coleman have entered the transfer portal, The Athletic has learned. Here’s what you need to know:

Thorne threw for 2,679 yards, 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season, his second as the Spartans’ starter.

Thorne, fourth-year junior Noah Kim and redshirt freshman Katin Houser were in a QB battle this spring, and coach Mel Tucker called it “an open competition.”

Coleman also shortly played basketball at Michigan State, appearing in six games in 2021-22.

Why transfer now?

The spring transfer portal window closes at the end of Sunday, so we’ll likely see more surprising departures right at the deadline. Thorne could’ve entered the portal at any time as a grad transfer, but it makes sense to do this now and move quickly on finding his next school.
