The Detroit Tigers have signed right-handed reliever Trevor Rosenthal to a minor-league contract with a non-roster invitation to spring training.

Rosenthal, 32, hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2020. He could compete for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.

The Tigers and Rosenthal were in communication about the possibility of a minor-league contract since at least January, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Those talks picked up momentum over the past couple weeks and led to an agreement.

Rosenthal pitched 10 games for the Tigers in 2019.

The former All-Star reliever underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He missed the entire 2018 season while rehabbing and hasn’t been the same since the surgery.
