In the immortal words of the Rolling Stones: You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find – you get what you need. NBA teams know this well.

Surely, we’ve all wanted something we didn’t get. It’s a disappointing feeling.

On the other hand, sometimes, you end up getting something just as good, or better – and perhaps you wouldn’t have been able to get it if you’ve gotten the other thing.

For example, suppose you’re rejected by someone. You wanted to be with them, and they didn’t want to be with you. Rejection stings – until you meet someone else, that is.

The New York Knicks wanted Donovan Mitchell this summer. They didn’t get him. That’s unfortunate, but on the other hand, they’ve still got a cache of young players and draft capital to land a star player with.

Here’s a deal that has them landing Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix Suns Receive: G/F Evan Fournier, G/F Cam Reddish, F Obi Toppin, 2023 First-Round Pick (NYK), 2024 First-Round Pick (Swap – NYK), 2025 First-Round Pick (NYK), 2026 First-Round Pick (Swap – NYK), 2027 First-Round Pick (NYK)
