The Seattle Mariners (45-42) and Washington Nationals (30-58) play the second game of an interleague doubleheader Wednesday at Nationals Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET.

This analysis posted prior to Tuesday’s first game between Seattle and Washington.

This double-header will mark the first time the clubs have met this season.

The Mariners and Nationals were washed out in Tuesday’s interleague series opener, so now they’ll play two Wednesday. The M’s have played just one doubleheader this season, losing both games in a matchup at home against the Los Angeles Angels June 18.

The Nationals swept their first double dip April 19 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but have lost in the second game of their 2 other doubleheaders this season.

Mariners at Nationals projected starters

LHP Tommy Milone vs. RHP Erick Fedde

Milone (0-1, 3.60 ERA) makes his 1st start and 5th appearance. He has allowed 7 H and 0 BB with 4 K through 10 IP.

  • Has made 2 relief appearances on the road this season, allowing 2 ER and 3 H in 3 IP.
  • Returns to Washington where he made his major league debut in 2011, and returned to make 5 appearances in the 2018 season.

Fedde (5-6, 5.01 ERA) makes his 18th start. He has a 1.49 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9 and 7.2 K/9 through 82 2/3 IP.

  • Is 2-3 with a 4.60 ERA and .253 opponent batting average with 43 K across 45 IP in 9 starts at home this season.
  • Has posted a 1-0 record with a 1.80 ERA across 15 IP in 3 starts against American League opponents in 2022.

Mariners at Nationals odds and lines

  • Money line (ML): Mariners -117 (bet $117 to win $100)  | Nationals -103 (bet $103 to win $100)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Mariners -1.5 (+130) | Nationals +1.5 (-160 )
  • Over/Under (O/U): 9.5 (O: -107 | U: -115)

Mariners at Nationals picks and predictions

Prediction

Nationals 4, Mariners 2

Money line

The NATIONALS (-103) are a strong play in the back end of the doubleheader behind Fedde. Yes, Fedde was turned up for 8 runs last time out in Atlanta, serving up 3 homers in the process, but he had allowed 3 or fewer runs in each of his prior 4 outings and won 2 of them.

Milone isn’t stretched out and this will be a bullpen game for the Mariners. That’s not a good thing in the second end of a double dip.

Run line/Against the spread

The ALTERNATE RUN LINE NATIONALS -1.5 (+185) is worth a small-unit play as a bet against the team’s former southpaw Milone. Washington hasn’t won a ton of games this season, but it will get the best of the left-hander.

Over/Under

The UNDER 9.5 (-115) is the lean in Game 2.

Entering Wednesday, the Under is 5-2 in the last 7 starts for the M’s against a right-handed starting pitcher.

For the Nats, the Under is 5-2 in the last 7 home games, while going 5-1 in the past 6 interleague games — not counting Game 1 of this doubleheader.
