U.S. Open Field Update | Golf Betting Analysis

As Billy Horschel was crowned the winner at the Memorial Tournament on Sunday, much more than the win was on the line at Muirfield Village. Billy Horschel has clinched his spot in the U.S. Open next week and so had Aaron Wise, the runner-up this last weekend. Qualifying spots are still open as players from all around the world and the United States are set to make their mark in the game of golf.

Not only did the Memorial Tournament leave a lot of implications about the field list at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, but the implications surrounding the LIV Golf Tour could mess with the field as well. Last week, a list of names were released of players that would be committing to the new tour. The impactful names include Dustin Johnson, Kevin Na, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter.

As of now, players that are committed to the LIV Tour are still in the tournament field. Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA Tour, stated last week that players moving to the LIV will not be allowed to play in the PGA Tour events. The USGA will have full control of the U.S. Open field.

Old dogs with old tricks

Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are listed in the field list for the 2022 U.S. Open. The two players are being talked about in the golf world for many different reasons currently. Will we see either of them tee it up next week in Brookline?

The last time we saw Tiger Woods play was at the PGA Championship where he withdrew after three rounds. Woods had made the cut but shot a third round 79 and pulled out before the final round. Will Woods have the strength to compete this week and if he does, will he be ready for possibly four rounds of golf?

It has been about three months since we have seen Mickelson on the golf course. After his initial comments regarding the PGA Tour and the LIV golf league, Mickelson took a little hiatus from the game. He is now set to return this week in the LIV inaugural tournament and next week in the U.S. Open.

Mickelson needs the victory to complete the career grand slam. He has 80-1 odds to currently win the U.S. Open.

Woods currently has 50-1 odds to win the U.S. Open which would be the fourth of his career.

Top Players

Other top players in the field include World number one Scottie Scheffler and reigning U.S. Open Champion Jon Rahm. Scheffler has the best odds currently at 11-1 and Rahm is right behind Scheffler at 12-1 odds.

Dustin Johnson, LIV Tour player, is set to play as well and he is looking to win his second U.S. Open title. He won his first back in 2016 at Oakmont Country Club. Dustin Johnson currently has 16-1 odds to win his second U.S. Open championship.

Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa are all listed in the field as well. Thomas is coming off a major victory in the PGA Championship in Oklahoma. He has the third best odds with Morikawa at 14-1.
