Updated Tennis Betting Preview for the 2022 ATP Italian Open

Djokovic And Nadal

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are the main two favorites to win the 2022 Internazionali BNL d’Italia; however, they have landed in the same half of the draw, meaning only one of the two tennis superstars will make the finals.

Djokovic earned a direct bye into the Round of 32, where he’ll face off against the winner of Aslan Karatsev vs. Lloyd Harris, and even without knowing who will be his opponent, it’s fair to assume that the Serb will be favored to win. He won the event in Rome five times over his career, and he has done well in Madrid, where he made the semi-finals.

That said, seeing Djokovic make only semis is concerning, knowing that he has yet to show anything spectacular on the season. Notably, he lost the Serbia Open (Finals), Monte Carlo Masters (R32), and Dubai (QF), and he did not attend the Australian Open.

Admittedly, Djokovic has made a few deep runs, but for his standards, he should have won at least one even too far.

As a result, the 10-time champion in the Italian capital, Nadal, comes off as the more likely winner of the two. However, he has failed to achieve much in Madrid, where he lost against Carlos Alcaraz in the QFs and is fresh off a six-week break due to a rib injury.

Moreover, Nadal will have a tough start to Internazionali BNL d’Italia, as he will likely face off against John Isner, assuming Isner makes it past the first round. And even if Nadal makes it past Isner, he would have to face Casper Ruud, who could cause him some issues.

Zverev and Auger-Aliassime Can Be A Threat

There is no denying that Djokovic and Nadal are the main favorites to win in Rome, but we shouldn’t ignore Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Alexander Zverev has looked good of late and made the finals of the Madrid Open this weekend. Unfortunately, he had to admit defeat to Alcaraz; however, he took down Auger-Aliassime in QFs and Tsitsipas in the semi-finals.

Moreover, Zverev is ranked as the no.2 seed in Rome and has beaten Djokovic in the 2017 Italian Open finals. One thing that could concern anyone is the fact that Zverev might face off against Alcaraz in the QFs, but if he makes it past the Spaniard, the German tennis star should be in a good spot to win the title.

Auger-Aliassime lost in straight sets against Zverev last Friday in Madrid, but the Canadian did well prior to that. He defeated Sinner and Garin and has shown solid form early in the season.

Obviously, hiS road to the finals in Rome won’t be easy as the Canadian might face off against Djokovic in the SFs, but the two have yet to meet, and given Djokovic’s shaky form, it wouldn’t be fair to say that Auger-Aliassime won’t stand a chance.
