Baylor has named Blake Shapen its starting quarterback for the 2022 season, a source confirmed to The Athletic on Monday. Shapen, who backed up starter Gerry Bohanon in 2021, won a competition during spring football with Bohanon and redshirt freshman Kyron Drones.

SicEm365.com first reported Shapen earning the starting nod.

Last season, Shapen led Baylor to two wins as a starter: a 27-24 victory in the regular-season finale over Texas Tech and a 21-16 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship game. Shapen also finished off a 20-10 road win over Kansas State in November after Bohanon left the first half with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the next two games.

Bohanon was the full-time starter when healthy in 2021, leading Baylor to 10 wins, including a 21-7 victory over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl, the school's first New Year's Day bowl win in 65 years.
