Bruce Arians talks contingency plans if Tom Brady retires

The biggest storyline for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the head into the offseason will be Tom Brady’s decision to either retire, or return to the Bucs for at least one more season.

Brady himself has been noncommittal over the past couple of days when discussing the topic, while head coach Bruce Arians and other Bucs players have made it clear that the GOAT can take all the time he needs to make his decision, but also that they would obviously love to have him back for 2022.

If the GOAT does decide to walk away, Arians says the Bucs will once again explore all avenues in search of his replacement, just as they did two years ago when they landed Brady in free agency.

“Yeah, we do that with every position,” Arians said Monday. “Quarterback, obviously, you start there. Again, [we’ll] see where we’re heading and wait and see what Tom does. But we’ll be doing our homework, that’s for sure.”

Is Arians comfortable with that he currently has on the roster behind Brady, or would he look elsewhere?

“I’d be comfortable if it is,” Arians said when asked about going into next season with the likes of Blaine Gabbert and Kyle Trask at quarterback. “I like what we have, but again, you never know what’s behind Door No. 2. We kind of went down that road two years ago and there was Tom Brady. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Gabbert has only seen the field at the end of a few blowouts since Brady came to town, and Trask, Tampa Bay’s second-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, was inactive for every game this season.
