The Cleveland Browns enter Week 18 with very little to play for outside of pride and another win in the AFC North. The team could also impact their draft position this week. The Cincinnati Bengals have an outside shot at a higher seed but will be valuing health in the final week of the regular season before they hit the postseason.
The bigger story for the Browns is what could happen in 2022 at the quarterback position. Cleveland has already picked up the fifth-year option on Baker Mayfield’s rookie contract but has been linked to other quarterbacks, like Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans, who has sat out all of this season while facing numerous sexual harassment lawsuits.
With reported concerns related to the relationship between head coach Kevin Stefanski and Mayfield having been shot down by offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, there was some thought that Mayfield was done with the Browns.
According to a new report from NFL Network, the Browns and Mayfield are on the same page for 2022:
The Browns will head into the offseason with plans to retain Baker Mayfield as their quarterback for 2022, sources say.
Mayfield and Browns coach Kevin Stefanski spoke Friday as part of normal exit meetings, and sources say the two are on the same page.
With Mayfield set to undergo surgery soon on his shoulder, the team will hope for a healthy quarterback in 2022. With a lot of free agents, Cleveland’s roster could look significantly different.
Given the NFL Network report, the team has a clear direction at quarterback. The Browns, and their fans, hope that decision is the right one but have a long time to wait to find out.
