While the Indianapolis Colts were mapping out their scenarios when it comes to the quarterback position, their former starter in Philip Rivers became an option.

With Carson Wentz testing positive for COVID-19 and being out for five days at a minimum, head coach Frank Reich reached out to Rivers about the situation. The 40-year-old quarterback was on Christmas vacation with his family.

“Lastly, in regard to the quarterback position because I know some of you have asked or will ask – the chatter about Philip Rivers. Yes, I have talked to Philip. Obviously, you guys know that I’m close to him. We’ve talked all year long,” Reich said. “We have talked all year long. I kind of followed his coaching career, talking about his high school team that he coached. I did talk to him fairly recently. He was on a Christmas vacation with his family. I have talked to him about our situation here, but there is nothing to report and no other further comment at this point.”

The Colts are hopeful that Wentz can clear the new COVID-19 protocols by the time the game rolls around on Sunday. The team will have to activate him on Saturday without knowing his true status and then test him on Sunday morning to see if he can play. If he clears, he will be the starter against the Raiders.

In the meantime, the Colts will be rolling with rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who has been taking first-team reps in practice with Wentz on the COVID-19 list.
