Hoping to improve their league-worst offense, the Miami Marlins made their first offseason addition, claiming first baseman Jesus Aguilar off waivers.
The 29-year-old infielder was designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays last week.
A low-risk option, Aguilar will have a shot to compete for the starting first base position. While he’s just two years removed from a 35-home run season with the Milwaukee Brewers, the right-handed hitter saw a sharp decline this past season.
In 2018, the infielder hit .274/.352/.539 (134 wRC+) with 35 home runs, 25 doubles and a 3.1 WAR in an All-Star campaign.
