Bad news already for the Edmonton Oilers as they have lost top-four defenseman Adam Larsson for 6-8 weeks with a fractured right fibula. He appeared in 82 games last season, with three goals, 17 assists and 44 penalty minutes. The Oilers gave up future Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall in a trade to New Jersey in 2016 to get Larsson and that deal has become incredibly lopsided in favor of the Devils. Here’s a look at two intriguing early-week NHL betting matchups, both nationally televised. Check back for NHL odds.
Top NHL Betting Picks of the Week – October 7th Edition
San Jose Sharks at Nashville Predators
- When: Tuesday, 8 PM ET
- TV: NBC Sports Network
- Live Stream: NHL.tv
The Sharks will get a key piece back in winger Evander Kane. He was suspended three games for an incident in his team’s final preseason game. In the third period of a game at Vegas, Kane and Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland got into an altercation after the Knights defenseman held Kane’s stick following a hit.
Engelland cross-checked Kane, and Kane responded with a slash that appeared to also make contact with linesman Kiel Murchison. As Kane skated back up the ice, Murchison grabbed the front of Kane’s jersey, trying to prevent an escalation with Engelland, and they tumbled down to the ice. Kane was dinged for physical abuse of an official. He had 30 goals and 26 assists last year.
San Jose was 2-1 vs. Nashville last year.
The Sharks are 0-3 following Saturday’s 3-1 loss in Anaheim – San Jose has totaled just three goals so far. The team went 0-for-4 on the power play vs. the Ducks and is 0-for-14 on the season. Marcus Sorensen suffered an undisclosed injury when he fell into the end boards in the second period Saturday and did not return. Sorensen has one of only three San Jose goals this season.
What about the Predators?Nashville is 1-1 following a 5-3 home loss to Detroit on Saturday. Free-agent addition Matt Duchene is off to a strong start with the Predators. Nashville has scored a total of eight goals through two games and Duchene has collected five assists. He has been playing alongside Filip Forsberg and Mikael Granlund, while logging time on the Predators’ top power-play unit. Viktor Arvidsson has a goal in each of Nashville’s two games this season. He set a Nashville franchise record last season with 34 goals.
New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers
- When: Wednesday, 7:30 PM ET
- TV: NBC Sports Network
- Live Stream: NHL.tv
These teams split four regular-season games last year.
It’s just the second game for Philly – most teams have played two or three by now – because it opened the season Friday in Prague against Chicago. Nolan Patrick has begun the season on the injured/non-roster list. Patrick is dealing with a migraine disorder. Patrick had 13 goals and 18 assists last year.
Carter Hart saved 28 of 31 shots in the 4-3 win over Chicago on Friday. One of the three goals Hart allowed was scored with the man advantage. He’s entering his sophomore campaign after posting a 2.83 GAA and .917 save percentage last season. Travis Konecny scored twice in the victory. Michael Raffl found the back of the net for Philadelphia. Oskar Lindblom accounted for the Flyers’ other goal.
Tyler Pitlick made his first game as a Flyer a memorable one, picking up the primary assist on Michael Raffl’s goal and posting a +1 rating. It was also Kevin Hayes’ first game as a Flyer… He had multiple chances which include a full breakaway, a deflection in front on the power-play, and another partial break in which he was taken down, but no penalty was called on the play. All in all, he logged 18:33 of ice time and had three hits. The Flyers won their season opener for the fourth year in a row and are now 4-0-1 in their last five openers.
What about the Devils?
New Jersey is 0-2 following a 7-2 loss in Buffalo on Saturday. Former Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall briefly left Saturday’s game after a collision with Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe. Hall got the worst of an attempted hit on the play, but returned in the third period. He logged 15:54 of ice time in the contest and posted his second assist in two games.
The Devils were a step behind from the start, and a night after a monumental season-opening collapse in which they blew a 4-0 second-period lead in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets.
