The new face of Auburn’s football team has a familiar surname.
Bo Nix was named the Tigers’ starting quarterback Tuesday, head coach Gus Malzahn announced, bringing an end to a competition with redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood that lasted throughout the spring and the duration of fall camp.
It’s officially Bo time on the Plains.
The naming of Nix as the starting quarterback for the season opener against Oregon on Aug. 31 in Arlington, Texas, hails in a new era for Auburn’s offense. It will be the first time in his head coaching career that Malzahn — who has retaken over play-calling duties this year — has started a freshman quarterback to open a season, and it will be the first time Auburn has started a true freshman at quarterback in Week 1 during the modern era.
