Argentina forward Lionel Messi has been banned from international football for three months following his claims that the Copa America was ‘corrupt’.
The Barcelona forward has been fined £41,121 for his comments after Argentina’s 2-1 win against Chile in the third-place play-off of the competition, which was held in Brazil in June.
Messi was sent off during the match for an incident involving former Cardiff City midfielder Gary Medel but replays showed the Barcelona star did little to warrant the red card.
‘We don’t have to be part of this corruption,’ said Messi after the game.
‘They have showed us a lack of respect throughout this tournament.
‘Sadly, the corruption, the referees, they don’t allow people to enjoy football, they ruined it a bit.’
