Madison Bumgarner on staying with Giants: ‘I’ve got a job to do’

Madison Bumgarner was among the biggest names in the rumor mill in the weeks leading up to Wednesday’s trade deadline. Despite the belief his storied tenure with the San Francisco Giants could be coming to an end, the World Series hero nevertheless remained with the only MLB organization he’s ever known.

The reason the Giants opted to hold on to Bumgarner obviously had everything to do with the team’s remarkable run the team of late. The Giants (55-53) are currently only two games back in the NL Wild Card hunt, so keeping their ace was a logical non-move in the end.

With that in mind, Bumgarner believes all the trade speculation was “just noise” and nothing else.

“I never expected to be somewhere else until that happened,” Bumgarner told reporters after Wednesday’s trade deadline passed, via ESPN. “Nothing has changed for me. I don’t look at it as being past a hurdle. I’ve got a job to do, and I’m going to do it.

“That’s why we all show up here. Nobody is here collecting paychecks. We’re trying to win games.”

Bumgarner is not enjoying his best season, posting a 6-7 record with a 3.74 ERA in 23 starts. That said, Giants brass went out of their way to praise the left-hander, with Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi calling Bumgarner a “trend-setter” not only in the clubhouse but also for the entire organization.
