The Michigan coaching staff devised a plan to add West Bloomfield (Mich.) safety Makari Paige to its 2020 class, and it was executed to perfection. The 6-3, 182-pounder announced his commitment to the Wolverines moments ago, just three days after traveling to Ann Arbor for the annual Barbecue at the Big House.
Paige is third Top247 safety to pledge to the Wolverines, joining Jordan Morant and RJ Moten. The brass in Ann Arbor sold the trio on the idea that they thrive alongside one another in Don Brown’s defense. That message was hammered home during the barbecue.
“I think it was a very strategic move by the coaching staff to say, ‘hey listen, this kid (Moten) just committed today. However, we would love for you guys to play together with Jordan Morant’,” West Bloomfield coach Ron Bellamy said.
Michigan’s cause was helped significantly by the fact that Paige was previously acquainted Morant and several other Maize & Blue commitments.
“I like the class a lot,” Paige told The Michigan Insider in a prior interview. “I’ve become cool with some players already like A.J. Henning (and) Jordan Morant, who I met at Penn State and (we’ve) been really cool since then. And a couple other players as well like (West Bloomfield teammate) Cornell (Wheeler) and Andre (Seldon) of course.”
