Five-Star 2020 Shooting Guard DJ Steward picked up a scholarship offer from Duke on July 12th, with the sharpshooter impressing the Blue Devils' coaching staff enough during the Nike EYBL Peach Jam.
"Jalen Johnson and Jeremy Roach have been in my ear a lot lately trying to get me to join The Brotherhood," Steward said in his USA Today blog.
Before Steward got the offer, Duke coach Jon Scheyer had been in touch and told him that Mike Krzyzewski was going to watch him play live at the Peach Jam, a prerequisite for earning a scholarship offer for the Blue Devils. It didn't take long for Krzyzewski to see that Steward had what it took to be the program's top backcourt target to pair with Roach in 2020-21. With Johnson expected to man either forward position at 6'8", the coaching staff wants a shooter at the two spot to complement the two creators. Steward fits the bill, connecting on 39.2% of his 97 three-point attempts during the entire EYBL season. He scored 46 points on 19-31 shooting in a thrilling game at the EYBL's Indianapolis stop, earning D1 Circuit's performance of the year for the EYBL Regular Season playing with Meanstreets (Illinois).
Krzyzewski and Scheyer, both Chicago natives like Steward, have developed a relationship with the Four-Star scoring guard.
