Jasper Cillessen emerges as Manchester United target with David De Gea’s future in doubt

Daily Record

Netherlands international Jasper Cillessen has emerged as a leading candidate to replace David De Gea at Manchester United as the English Premier League side prepare for the potential summer exit of their first-choice goalkeeper.

Cillessen, 30, has publicly expressed his intention to leave Barcelona, having spent three seasons in Catalonia as a back-up to Marc-Andre ter Stegen. United have been informed that Barca are looking for a transfer fee of €25million plus performance-related bonuses for a player they signed from Ajax in 2016.

De Gea's future at Old Trafford is in doubt due to a stand-off over the terms of a proposed contract renewal. The Spain international – voted the Premier League's number one goalkeeper in five of the last seven seasons – wants his status as United's best footballer to be rewarded with the same financial terms as United granted Alexis Sanchez in January 2018. Ed Woodward has told De Gea's representatives that such an increase is impossible.

United's executive vice-chairman is understood to feel that he made an error in handing Sanchez a four-and-a-half year deal that established the forward as the Premier League's best paid footballer, and does not want to repeat that mistake in renewing De Gea's contract.
